When do I need to take out Coronavirus travel protection?

If possible, together with cancellation insurance when booking a trip

Any insurance contract that includes travel cancellation insurance must be concluded within 3 working days (Monday - Saturday) of booking the trip (booking date + 3 working days) at the latest. If the insurance is concluded later, the insurance cover shall only extend to events that occur from the 10th day after conclusion of the insurance (“qualifying period”).

Please note that you can only take out Coronavirus travel protection in addition to cancellation insurance (one-off or annual insurance) from HanseMerkur for the same trip.

Am I also covered if an entire district is quarantined?

Only when personal quarantine is required

No, that is not covered. We will pay if quarantine is ordered for you personally, or a person at risk. We will not pay if you or a person at risk are unable or not permitted to depart, enter, continue or transit due to officially ordered local (e.g. apartment complex), regional (e.g. districts, cities or boroughs) or supra-regional (affecting more than one city, district) quarantine measures or contact or exit restrictions.

What documents do I submit in the event of a claim?

Booking confirmation and proof of insurance

In the event of a claim, we require the following documents and information from you:

  • Copy of the booking confirmation
  • Copy of the insurance certificate
  • Address data of the policyholder
  • Bank details for refunds

Can I take out Coronavirus protection insurance for travel by ship?

Coronavirus protection insurance applies to all types of travel

Yes, the benefits of the Coronavirus protection insurance in your travel cancellation and travel curtailment insurance also apply to ship trips such as cruises.

Who are the people at risk?

Jointly booked and domestic community

Persons at risk are persons,

  • who have booked a trip together with you. Up to 6 insured persons (no more than 2 families in the case of family premiums) are insured, who have booked a trip together
  • who live with you in a domestic community
